CPS / REQUIREMENTS

California Guard Card Requirements

California security guard applicants need to satisfy both training and state application requirements. Use this page as a checklist, then confirm the current rules with BSIS before you submit anything.

THE GUIDE

Age and eligibility

California requires applicants to meet basic eligibility requirements, including the minimum age. Do not rely on a course provider alone to determine eligibility for every individual situation.

Training topics

The CPS starter course covers Powers to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force in an 8-hour format. Additional training requirements may apply after the initial registration; check BSIS for the current schedule.

Application and fees

The Guard Card application is submitted through the state process, not through CPS. Current fees, forms, and submission details can change, so use the official BSIS source.

Background check and Live Scan

Applicants must complete the required criminal-history background-check process. Live Scan instructions and forms should come from BSIS or the current state application materials.

Requirements and fees can change. Confirm current information with California BSIS and use Breeze when directed by the state.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions students ask

Does passing the course guarantee approval?

No. Course completion documents the training step. BSIS makes the final determination through its application and background-check process.

Where can I verify current requirements?

Start with the official BSIS Security Guard page linked below, then follow its current application instructions.
