1. Confirm the basic starting requirements
Applicants must meet the state eligibility requirements, including being at least 18 years old. Review current BSIS instructions before applying.
2. Complete the required training
CPS provides an 8-hour course covering Powers to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force. Complete the lessons and quizzes, then retain the digital certificate.
3. Submit the state application
The application is handled through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Use the official BSIS and Breeze instructions for the current form, fee, and submission method.
4. Complete Live Scan and background-check steps
The Department of Justice and FBI background-check process is separate from course enrollment. Follow the state instructions for the correct Live Scan form and location.
5. Track your application and keep your records
Keep your certificate, application confirmation, and fingerprinting records together. If the state requests additional information, respond through the official channel.
Requirements and fees can change. Confirm current information with California BSIS and use Breeze when directed by the state.
