CPS / LIVE SCAN

What Is Live Scan for a California Guard Card?

Live Scan is the electronic fingerprinting step used in California background-check processes. For Guard Card applicants, it is part of the state process and should be completed using the correct instructions and form.

THE GUIDE

Bring the correct information

Use the current BSIS application materials to confirm which form, agency information, and identification documents you need before visiting a provider.

Choose a qualified provider

Live Scan locations vary. Confirm that the provider can process the form you were given and ask about the current fee before you go.

Keep the receipt

Retain your Live Scan transaction information with your application records. If a question comes up later, the receipt helps document what was submitted.

Live Scan does not replace training

Fingerprinting is a background-check step, not a substitute for completing the required Guard Card training course.

Requirements and fees can change. Confirm current information with California BSIS and use Breeze when directed by the state.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions students ask

Can CPS perform my Live Scan?

CPS training and Live Scan fingerprinting are separate services. Use the official BSIS instructions to find the correct next step.

What if I already had fingerprints taken?

Follow the current BSIS instructions for your application; do not assume a prior fingerprint submission transfers automatically.
